WHO SHOULD PARTICIPATE: CMOs, CNOs, CFOs, hospital security professionals, information technology staff, compliance officers, emergency department personnel, joint commission coordinators, quality improvement personnel, risk managers, legal counsel, and anyone else interested in the subject matter.
OVERVIEW: In 2023, the Transportation Security Administration confiscated almost 7,000 firearms at airport security checkpoints. Last year, a health system in Ohio confiscated 30,000 weapons! This begs the question: How do hospitals balance the safety, security, and privacy of patients, visitors, and their workforce? This session will discuss the emergence of increased and innovative security measures in hospitals to address the recent uptick in violent incidents at healthcare facilities. The session will also provide insight into trends and cover legal and compliance issues.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- Describe the emergence of weapons detectors and other security measures;
- Discuss expectations for patients, staff, and visitors; and
- Identify regulatory and compliance issues, including EMTALA and HIPAA.
